Connected and Celebrated: UQ Graduation Hall

by Luke Lancaster

This design proposal for a new UQ Graduation hall is built around the idea of cultural identity. This includes both celebrating the international students at our university, the diversity of domestic staff and students, and the identity of UQ within Brisbane and Queensland. The main cultural hallway in this project celebrates different identities by creating interactive exhibition spaces hosted by student groups and the Anthopology Museum. Alongside this lays the cultural rest towers and garden, a space for those who need extra privacy on graduation day, with intergration with nature to provide a calming, serene environment. Linking back to the Queensland identity this building should display, local timber such as Hoop Pine is used throughout the building. A focus on natural ventilation and sunlight creates a connection back to the vernacular history of building for Brisbane’s sub-tropical climate.
