The Great Hall

by Caroline Lund

Proposing a new Great Hall at the University of Queensland that creates a spatial narrative of movement, memory, and material expression.

An active network and central precinct is established between the Forgan Smith building, ModWest, Art Gallery, and community garden, drawing visitors

through a series of landscaped paths. A main entry pathway is formed for the hall, running between the Art Gallery and ModWest, becoming a ceremonial

procession that honors the student journey and the history of UQ. The series of truncated pyramids are arranged and scaled in accordance with the utility of the space. A story forms through the changing of these spaces, with the main hall becoming the monument of the precinct.

The capstone focus on timber framing bridges the landscaping with the interior of the Great Hall to create a space that expresses the grandeur of nature (inspired by the scale of the Bunya Tree and the pattern presented by its pine cone).

The structure celebrates the richness of the material and its connection to the land.
