Garden of Azaleas
Azaleas are known for their vibrant colours and evergreen nature. Nestled in the northern region of Greenslopes, Garden of Azaleas is a co housing unit designed for low-income senior women who live alone.
Through considered design strategies such as centralised layouts, separation of private and public space, and incorporation of green space in between dwellings, this complex aims to promote the general wellbeing of residents. The front of the site includes a community productive garden that is accessible to both the public and residents. Next to the productive garden is a lobby that acts a threshold between public and private space.
Brick-veneered dwellings are formed in rows around the central courtyard to encourage community activities. The small rain garden located in the central courtyard acts not only as a decorative landscaping element, but as a flood resilient strategy. At the back of the site, next to the shrub of trees, a courtyard frames the water fountain, serving as a space for residents to relax and enjoy the view of the trees. The common house is connected to the corner garden and completes the loop of dwellings around the central garden. The space behind each dwelling serves as a private backyard for each resident. Each dwelling lot is divided by two trees.
